A Love Letter to Sister

What I Should Have Told You Years Ago

I’m proud of you, sis
For being you
I love you for who you are
Regardless of what you do

Any choice you make
I support with all of my heart
Because I trust in you
And know each choice is a part

A part of a greater whole
A chapter of your path
Your divine journey
Full of joy, curiosity, wrath

There’s no emotion you can’t feel
No situation you can’t handle
You’re my unstoppable baby sis
Do a dance, light a candle

Today we are celebrating
Your very existence
Indulge in your human BEING
Let go of any resistance

You feel fully
You love hard
Drop your walls
There’s nothing to guard

You’re divine, you know
Every freckle is an angels kiss
You leave things better than you found them
When you leave your presence people miss

An aura of strength
Mixed with a gentle soul
Energy for days
18 on University honor roll

Wants the best for this world
Embodies strength and grace
Protector of the innocent
Doesn’t eat anything with a face

Able to forgive
Doesn’t need to forget
Takes life lessons as they come
Smiles at strangers who just met

25 years old
Eyes that flicker green
The world is your playground
White light is what you beam

It’s ok
Not to have everything “figure out”
It’s ok
To take sharp turns and alternate routes

It’s ok
To get lost in your own mind
Take time to breath
Moments to unwind

You’re not just my sister
You’re a sister goddess
Divine family I choose
No need to be modest

Shine, sparkle
Talk a little too loud
Ask big questions
Of yourself, be proud

You’ve survived every situation
Each hard conversation
Remember all those times screaming
To songs on the Impala radio station

You’re loved
More than you’ll ever know
I can’t wait to watch
As you continue to grow

Physical distance isn’t a barrier
Intermittent communication will occur
Our connection is able to transcend
Of this, I am infinitely sure

Love you, Babygirl
I’m your ride or die
About to share physical space
Let’s giggle and cry

There’s space for anything
Let’s leave a little room for fun
Dance under the moon
Bask in the sun

These poems serve two purposes… 1) The clarity they provide me. And the greatest reason I feel compelled to share.. 2) For you to experience the “we.”
